Carlos Fernández Alvarez

Senior Coal Analyst
International Energy Agency

Carlos Fernández Alvarez joined the International Energy Agency as a Senior Energy Analyst in 2010. As such, he has contributed for many of IEA publications, included the IEA's flagship publication, the World Energy Outlook. He is responsible of Medium-Term Coal Market Report publication. Carlos has twenty five years of experience in the energy sector. He started his career as an energy consultant for electricity producer plans. He was mainly involved in system modelling and safety assessments for nuclear power plants, but also worked on control room design, radiological protection, licensing activities, research and development projects and bid assessments. In 2001, after 10 years in the private sector, he joined the Spanish Government as Energy Adviser, participating in the discussion of the Second Gas and Electricity Directives. In 2003, he was nominated Deputy Director for Mining in the Directorate of Energy Policy and Mining. Then, in 2007, he became Director of the Spanish Coal Agency, the body responsible for the coal sector and the alternative development of the coal mining areas in Spain.
