Howard Gatiss

Howard Gatiss graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in Economics. For many years he worked with Shell across the world in a variety of disciplines; oil trader, marketing manager, business development manager culminating in his position of CEO of the downstream businesses in Vietnam, which included lubricants, bitumen and chemicals. He left Shell in 1997 to establish BICC, a British cable manufacturer, in China. BICC was acquired by Pirelli in 2000. He became CEO of Pirelli Power Cables China and integrated the operations of the two companies.In January 2003 he set up CMC - Coal Marketing Company, sister company and commercial division of Carbones del Cerrejón, Colombia. Exports have risen from 18 million tonnes (2002) to 34 million mt in 2014: the expansion project, taking export capacity to 40 million mtpa and beyond, is now complete, with the second berth and new ship loader commissioned in September 2014. CMC covers the whole of the Atlantic market from the USA, Central and South America to Europe and the wider Mediterranean. A sales office was established in 2006 in Atlanta, Georgia, to service the American markets.CMC and Cerrejón are owned in equal parts by Anglo American, BHP Billiton and Glencore.
