Report: Met coal top 10 trends survey & analysis

Platts conducted an industry-wide survey in January-February to determine the key developments that market participants think will unfold in 2016, and here are the results.


Metallurgical coal prices witnessed a torrid 2015, as receding Chinese steel consumption pushed prices to multi-year lows and heaped pressure on Australian and US suppliers. Spot and quarterly-term prices plunged 31% and 25% year-on-year respectively.

But 2016 promises more drastic developments - with the market gripped by news of Australian asset sales, as well as coal supply and logistics cost cuts in China since the start of the year.
