Top 3 survival tips for coal producers

How to survive in the coal industry if you are a producer? Pat Hanna, Executive Director of Cokal Limited shares his top 3 survival tips.

1. Select your projects carefully

I think the top survival tip would be well known, and that is select your projects carefully. As a very good mentor of mine told me, mining is about making money, it is not only about digging holes. To us, the success of a project is all about maximising the profit margin, that is, select a high value coal and ensure you mine and transport it at the most cost effective way.

2. Select a good management team

The second survival tip would have to be select a good management team which has experience in exploration, mining, marketing and financial management. There are many mining juniors which often have a narrow emphasis in one or two of these skills, and very few can cover all four so well. Following on from this is the need to be prepared for project development delays.

3. Ensure the company and project are accepted by the local community

The final survival tip is more pertinent today than any other time, and that is to ensure the company and the project are accepted and supported by the local community, as well as all levels of government. Cokal has the attitude that we consider ourselves visitors to the country, we have been given the privilege to develop the rich resources which lay beneath their land, and in return we wish to significantly contribute to the socio economic development of the local and regional communities by providing high quality education, medical facilities and employment.
