    • Located at the northwest end of the city, Sociedad Portuaria de Santa Marta serves Colombian foreign commerce on a 24-hour daily basis all year round. Thanks to its strategic location facing the Caribbean Sea and the natural depth of its bay, it is considered nowadays as one of the most important cities of great significance to Colombia in this economic activity.

The Port of Santa Marta becomes the most important company on a local level transporting through its facilities all types of cargo. Trough this terminal is exported part of the coal production of the Colombian Caribbean coast.

The Port has invested in modern facilities for direct loading of coal, made up by five dumpsters that allow the discharge of over 600 trucks per day. These dumpsters have a 55 degree lift that guarantees the total discharge of the product. To control the emission of coal dust into the environment, water, foam and resin sprinklers are used. Our storage capacity is 250.000 tons and the capacity of loading is 7.000.000 tons per year.

By means of its covered conveyors belts and pipe conveyor, the mineral is carried to the radials stackers for storage purposes. The ship-loading is performed using the radial stacker that drops the coal directly into the ship’s holds at an average loading rate of 2,200 tons per hour, which allows to clear ships with loads of 70,000 tons in only two days. The terminal has a metal detector in order to prevent the coal mix with inert or ferrous materials and a sampler for quality assurance.  This system is operated by our affiliate, CARBOSAN Ltda.

Thanks to our commitment and leadership in the implementation of world environmental standards Santa Marta´s Terminal is in the way to obtain a green port certification in the line with our Social Responsibility programs.
